• Martin Luther King (by Celeste Lopez)

Hello students of 4eme, I’m going to present you Martin Luther King.

Martin Luther King Jr was born in January 15th 1929 and died on April 4th 1968.

He was born in a pastor family. When King was a child,"he befriended a white boy whose father owned business near his family’s home. When the boys were six, they started school": King had to go on the school for African Americans and the other boy went to one for white people. "King lost his friend because the child father no longer wanted the boys to play together."

King "was an American Baptist minister and became one of the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights mouvement from 1954 to 1968."

He led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and "in 1957 he becames the first president of the Southern Christian Lleadership Conference." He helped organize the 1963 Washington March, where he delivered his famous  “I Have a Dream“ speech. On October 14th 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial segregation through non- violent  resistance.

At the age of 39 years, he was shot by James Earl Ray. A memorial was dedicated to him in Washington.

Martin Luther King still represents an emblematic figure in non-violent activism for the civil rights of the Blacks in the USA and more generally, in the fight for peace and against poverty.cool
